A milestone was achieved at the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) headquarters as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the County Government of Laikipia and KAGRC. The event was graced by H.E. Joshua Irungu EGH, Governor of Laikipia, alongside Dr. Nuh Nassir, Board Chairman of KAGRC, and Dr. Benadatte Misoi, Managing Director of KAGRC. This partnership is set to accelerate breed improvement initiatives in Laikipia County, with a strong focus on artificial insemination (AI) to enhance both beef and dairy production.
The MOU also outlines plans for joint efforts in organizing refresher training sessions for inseminators and workshops for farmers to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve livestock productivity. This initiative aims to strengthen agricultural practices and contribute to food security in the region.
The signing ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Dennis Kasoo, CECM for Agriculture, Livestock, Mechanization & Cooperative Development in Laikipia County; Mary Gichuru, Chief Officer for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; Alexander Muchemi, County Attorney; Elijah Mbugua from the Department of Agriculture; Strategic Partnership and Stakeholder Coordinator Ncebere Jackson; and a technical team from KAGRC.
This collaboration marks an important step towards transforming livestock farming in Laikipia County. By prioritizing breed improvement and capacity-building initiatives, the partnership is expected to have a lasting impact on the livelihoods of farmers and the overall agricultural sector in the region.
