The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) continued to engage farmers, livestock producers and stakeholders during Day 3 of the Madaraka Day 2026 Pre-Celebrations Exhibition held at Wagberi Primary School in Wajir County.
The KAGRC team, led by the Managing Director, Dr. Benadatte Misoi, alongside the Head of Directorate of Extension Services, Mr. David Sang, Principal Extension Officer, Dr. Paul Juma, and the North Eastern Sales Representative, Mr. Wario Kana, showcased the Centre’s role in livestock genetic improvement through Artificial Insemination (AI), sexed semen technologies and access to quality animal genetics.
The exhibition provided an opportunity for KAGRC to sensitize farmers on the benefits of improved livestock breeds in enhancing productivity, climate resilience and farmer incomes, particularly within the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs). Among the breeds highlighted were Jersey for crossbreeding, Boran, Sahiwal, Magic 50 and improved goat breeds suited for the region.
A key highlight of the exhibition was a visit by the Head of Presidential Special Projects, Mr. Denis Itumbi, who held discussions with the KAGRC team on expanding AI services in Wajir and other ASAL counties. Discussions focused on strengthening livestock breeding programmes and increasing access to quality breeding services to support sustainable livestock production.
KAGRC also highlighted the challenge of limited access to Liquid Nitrogen (LN₂), a critical component in the storage and distribution of semen for AI services. To address this challenge, the Centre proposed the establishment of solar-powered mini-LN₂ production plants at an estimated cost of Ksh 20–30 million per unit to enhance accessibility and support sustainable livestock breeding programmes in remote regions.
