KAGRC Strengthens Partnership with Taita Taveta County to Enhance Livestock Productivity

14th October 2025, Taita Taveta — The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) Managing Director, Dr. Benadatte J. Misoi, paid a courtesy visit to the Taita Taveta County Government, where she held strategic engagements with Hon. Dawson Katuu Mzenge, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock Development, Irrigation, Cooperatives Development and Blue Economy; Chief Officer Mr. Stephen Mcharo; County Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Jeremiah Ngugi; and their technical team.

The visit sought to strengthen the existing partnership between KAGRC and the County Government, anchored on an active Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that supports the supply of sexed semen, conventional semen, and liquid nitrogen to local farmers through a county-run subsidy programme.
• During the meeting, both parties discussed key areas of collaboration, including:
• Establishment of a KAGRC Centre in the county to enhance access to quality genetic resources.
• Capacity building for service providers and farmer sensitization in the dairy and beef value chains.
• Introduction and promotion of goat semen and the Magic 50 dual-purpose breed, well-suited to the county’s ecological conditions.
With seven established dairy cooperatives actively aggregating milk in partnership with the Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC), the collaboration continues to promote sustainable livestock productivity, value addition, and farmer empowerment across the region. This engagement reaffirmed KAGRC’s commitment to working closely with county governments to enhance access to superior genetics and build resilient livestock systems that drive growth and improve livelihoods.

Sale of Bull Semen

KAGRC distributes semen, Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) and Artificial Insemination (AI) Equipment through seventy three (73) appointed agents spread within the Country.

In addition, KAGRC, has established Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with over twenty nine (29) County Governments that purchase semen Liquid Nitrogen and AI equipment directly from KAGRC.

Currently the Centre is dealing with bull semen but in KAGRC’s strategic plan, semen for other species e.g. goats, pigs, poultry, donkeys, camels and other animals will be availed.

Production of Liquid Nitrogen

KAGRC produces liquid Nitrogen which is used in semen processing and preservation at its three (3) Liquid Nitrogen plants in Sotik-Bomet County, Ndomba-Kirinyaga County, and Lower Kabete –Nairobi County.

The Liquid Nitrogen is sold to Agents and AI inseminators. The Centre will soon install other LN2 plants in Kakamega and Voi counties and operationalize the ones in Marimba -Meru, Nyahururu-Nyandarua and Eldoret- Uasin Gishu Counties.

Dr. Azegele is the Director of Veterinary Services in the Directorate of Veterinary Services within the State Department for Livestock Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
