KAGRC Strengthens Collaboration with Kajiado Sahiwal Society to Enhance Genetic Improvement

15th September 2025, Nairobi — The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) Managing Director, Dr. Benadatte J. Misoi, hosted the Chairman of the Kajiado Sahiwal Society, Mr. Samuel Sinkeel, and a team from the society during a consultative meeting aimed at strengthening collaboration in livestock breeding and genetic improvement.
The Kajiado Sahiwal Society brings together livestock farmers from Kajiado County who are dedicated to conserving, improving, and promoting the Sahiwal breed — a highly valued dual-purpose breed known for its adaptability to arid and semi-arid regions, high milk yield under low-input systems, and resilience to diseases and harsh climatic conditions.
The discussions explored avenues for partnership between KAGRC and the Society to enhance farmers’ access to superior genetics and improve productivity at the grassroots level. The meeting also highlighted KAGRC’s plans to import new Sahiwal genetics from India and Pakistan, a move that will diversify and strengthen the country’s genetic pool for improved livestock performance.
In attendance were Mr. Daniel Kirrinkat, Mr. Samuel Koisani, and Mr. Duncan Milia, representing the Kajiado Sahiwal Society. The engagement offered the visiting team valuable insights into the potential of artificial insemination (AI) as a key tool for improving herd genetics.
The Society members expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about KAGRC’s role in promoting AI technologies and the availability of high-quality Sahiwal semen. With the knowledge gained, the team is now better positioned to integrate AI into their breeding programmes — a step expected to significantly enhance milk and beef production within Kajiado County.

Sale of Bull Semen

KAGRC distributes semen, Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) and Artificial Insemination (AI) Equipment through seventy three (73) appointed agents spread within the Country.

In addition, KAGRC, has established Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with over twenty nine (29) County Governments that purchase semen Liquid Nitrogen and AI equipment directly from KAGRC.

Currently the Centre is dealing with bull semen but in KAGRC’s strategic plan, semen for other species e.g. goats, pigs, poultry, donkeys, camels and other animals will be availed.

Production of Liquid Nitrogen

KAGRC produces liquid Nitrogen which is used in semen processing and preservation at its three (3) Liquid Nitrogen plants in Sotik-Bomet County, Ndomba-Kirinyaga County, and Lower Kabete –Nairobi County.

The Liquid Nitrogen is sold to Agents and AI inseminators. The Centre will soon install other LN2 plants in Kakamega and Voi counties and operationalize the ones in Marimba -Meru, Nyahururu-Nyandarua and Eldoret- Uasin Gishu Counties.
