The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC), in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) and the Kajiado County Government, officially launched an Insemination and Livestock Breed Improvement Programme in Kajiado County on 26th February 2026.
The launch ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Governor of Kajiado County, Martin Moshisho. He was joined by KRCS Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idriss, KAGRC Chairman Dr. Nuh Nassir, and KAGRC Managing Director Dr. Benadatte Misoi. Also present was the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock, Francis Ole Sakuda, alongside other county officials.
The programme aimed to genetically improve livestock breeds in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) to enhance both milk and meat production. Through the use of artificial insemination, the initiative was designed to produce offspring that were better adapted to harsh climatic conditions, more resilient, and characterized by improved growth rates.
A key component of the programme involved the insemination of 1,000 dual-purpose Sahiwal cattle. This effort was expected to not only improve livestock productivity but also strengthen women-led dairy cooperatives and boost community livelihoods across the county.
KAGRC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with county governments and strategic partners to deliver sustainable, science-driven solutions. The initiative underscored the importance of innovation in livestock production as a pathway to empowering communities and building resilience in the face of climate challenges.
