On 16th April 2026, the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) hosted a delegation from the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) led by the Program Lead for Tropical Dairy Genetic Gain (TDGG), Dr. Frank Lawale Anuoluwapo.
The ILRI delegation included Dr. Gebregziabher Gebreyohanes, Dr. Julie Ojango, Dr. Fara, and Mr. Jonathan Mueke from the State Department for Livestock Development. The meeting was chaired by KAGRC Managing Director, Dr. Benadatte Misoi, and included members of the TDGG Project team, among them Ms. Benadatte Jeptoo.
The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between KAGRC and ILRI, particularly in the sharing of performance data on KAGRC bulls and their progeny across the country. The partnership aimed to enhance the availability and use of reliable performance data to support genetic improvement programmes.
The collaboration was expected to play a critical role in advancing the development of a national breeding index, in partnership with other stakeholders in livestock breeding. The establishment of a national breeding index is anticipated to improve the accuracy of genetic selection and accelerate genetic gains for dairy farmers across Kenya.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment between KAGRC, ILRI, and partners in the livestock sector to promote data-driven breeding programmes, strengthen institutional collaboration, and support sustainable livestock productivity and national food security.
