The Managing Director of Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre, Dr. Benadatte Misoi, hosted a high-level breakfast meeting at the Lower Kabete Headquarters, bringing together the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, delegations from ABS Global and GenePlus Kenya, as well as the KAGRC technical team to advance strategic partnerships in sexed semen and genomic technologies.
The meeting built on outcomes from a recent benchmarking visit to ABS in Chester and focused on key priority areas including the importation of sexed semen, expansion of breed diversityโsuch as Ayrshire, Jersey, and SLICK gene bullsโto enhance climate resilience, and the development of customized KAGRC-branded genetic products to improve farmer recognition and traceability. Discussions also addressed the strengthening of quality assurance systems to improve conception rates, capacity building through technology transfer and staff benchmarking, and genomic evaluation initiatives, including the development of a Kenyan Dairy Index in collaboration with National Association of Animal Breeders. The engagement marked a significant step toward fostering farmer-driven demand, improving productivity in low-potential areas, and establishing a stronger, data-driven genetics ecosystem to support sustainable dairy and beef production in Kenya.
