23rd–24th September 2025, Mombasa — The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) was honored to participate in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) Livestock Transformation Summit, held in Mombasa from 23rd to 24th September 2025. The summit was presided over by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe, and the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke. The high-level event brought together Governors and technical teams from 24 ASAL counties, alongside key stakeholders in Kenya’s livestock value chain, to deliberate on transformative strategies aimed at building resilience and productivity in the livestock sector. KAGRC’s delegation, led by Chairman Dr. Nuh Nassir and Managing Director Dr. Benadatte J. Misoi, actively participated in the discussions focused on policy reforms, breed improvement, rangeland restoration, and the implementation of a national livestock traceability system. One of the summit’s key resolutions was the commitment to achieve an ambitious 80% national vaccination target by 2027, reinforcing Kenya’s dedication to improving animal health and ensuring sustainable livestock production across the ASAL regions. KAGRC’s participation reaffirmed its pivotal role in supporting genetic improvement and sustainable breeding programmes that are essential to achieving the sector’s long-term transformation agenda.
