When was KAGRC established?
The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) is a State Corporation established through the Legal Notice No. 110 of 5th September 2011 as a successor of the Central Artificial Insemination Station that came into existence. The latter was established with the objective of controlling breeding diseases and promoting genetic improvement of the national livestock population.
What is the mandate of KAGRC?
KAGRC is mandated to produce, preserve and conserve animal genetic material semen, embryo, tissues and live animals so as to meet the demand for national & export market. KAGRC derives its mandate from Legal Notice No. 110 of 5th September 2011 which is as follows:
- Establishment of a national livestock resources genebank for conservation of livestock tissues, DNA, semen and embryos of all livestock and emerging livestock species for posterity;
- Conservation for posterity and avail livestock tissue, DNA, semen and embryos of all livestock and emerging livestock species in Kenya for both research and breeding;
- Engagement in strategic semen production;
- Serve as a reference laboratory for certification, testing of semen, embryos and related livestock production materials for people of use and exports;
- Either alone or in collaboration with other institutions, develop and produce chemicals and laboratory products for use in the production of semen;
- Either alone or in collaboration with other institutions provide information on the suitability and effectiveness of animal breeding products; and
- Provide training in animal resource conservation products, semen, in-vitro embryo production and transfer and related technology transfer.

What is the Mandate of KAGRC?
Recruitment and rearing of breeding animals for germplasm production;
Production, preservation, conservation and distribution of superior quality disease free semen and embryos;
Production and distribution of liquid nitrogen;
Dissemination of information on breeding technologies and services to farmers;
Fodder production for the Centre's breeding animals;
Rendering specialized services to customers such as own farm semen collection, collection of samples for testing for reproductive diseases from contracted farms; and
Collaboration with other institutions in training and research on semen production and handling.

Besides cattle and goat semen production, are there other projects KAGRC is working on?
- Yes, KAGRC is in the process of establishing an embryo transfer facility for purposes of In-vitro embryo production and transfer.
- The Centre is also keen on availing sexed semen at competitive prices.
Does the packaging date affect viability of semen?
No, the packaging date indicated on semen straws or the age of a bull does not in itself determine the viability or fertility of the semen. When properly processed, cryopreserved and continuously stored under recommended liquid nitrogen conditions, bovine/buck semen can remain viable and effective for many years without loss of fertility potential.

A client can seek clarification or report a complaint via email, write a letter or a telephone call using the details below. Alternatively, the client can visit the KAGRC offices and seek clarification or orally report the complaint. Pertaining to complaints, full details should be provided to enable the centre determine the corrective actions as well as preventive measures to be taken. All complaints are treated with confidentiality.
