When was KAGRC established?
The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) is a State Corporation established through Legal Notice No. 110 of 5th September 2011 as a successor to the Central Artificial Insemination Station. The latter was established with the objective of controlling breeding diseases and promoting genetic improvement of the national livestock population.
What is the mandate of KAGRC?
KAGRC is mandated to produce, preserve, and conserve animal genetic material (semen, embryos, tissues, and live animals) to meet the demand for national and export markets. Derived from Legal Notice No. 110 of 5th September 2011, KAGRC's mandate includes:
- Establishment of a national livestock resources genebank for conservation of livestock tissues, DNA, semen, and embryos for posterity;
- Conservation and provision of livestock tissue, DNA, semen, and embryos of all livestock and emerging species in Kenya for research and breeding;
- Engagement in strategic semen production;
- Serving as a reference laboratory for certification and testing of semen, embryos, and related livestock production materials;
- Development and production of chemicals and laboratory products for semen processing (alone or in collaboration);
- Providing information on the suitability and effectiveness of animal breeding products; and
- Providing training in animal resource conservation products, semen processing, in-vitro embryo production, and transfer technologies.

Other Key Ongoing Projects
- KAGRC is establishing an embryo transfer facility for In-vitro embryo production and transfer (IVEP/ET).
- The Centre is actively working on making sexed semen widely available at competitive prices across Kenya.
Does the packaging date affect semen viability?
No, the packaging date indicated on semen straws or the age of a sire does not determine viability or fertility. When properly processed, cryopreserved, and continuously maintained under recommended liquid nitrogen temperatures (-196°C), semen remains viable and fertile for many years without loss of potential.
