Commissioning of the Goat Artificial Insemination Centre in Ndomba, Kirinyaga County

In a move towards enhancing livestock productivity and supporting Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), His Excellency the President, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, PhD., CGH, officially commissioned the Goat Artificial Insemination Centre in Ndomba, Kirinyaga County, on April 2, 2025.

Hosted by the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC), the commissioning ceremony was led by Chairman of the Board, Hon. Dr. Nuh Nassir, and Managing Director, Dr. Benadatte Misoi, who proudly welcomed the Head of State and other dignitaries to witness the official opening of this transformative facility.

Strategically designed to serve all Counties across Kenya and the broader African region, the Goat AI Centre focuses on the production and distribution of high-quality buck semen from superior goat breeds. These include dual-purpose breeds such as Anglo Nubian and Galla, as well as Saanen, Alpine, and Toggenburg for dairy production. By offering buck semen at a retail price of Ksh 500 per straw, the Centre plays an important role in supporting farmers, enhancing breed quality, and boosting productivity within the dairy, meat, and leather value chains. This initiative directly aligns with the government’s BETA goals, aiming to empower farmers at the grassroots level through improved access to quality genetics, increased milk and meat yields, and better market access.

The commissioning event saw the attendance of key national and county leaders, including: H.E. Deputy President: Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Kirinyaga County Governor: Hon. Anne Waiguru, EGH, Principal Secretary, State Department for Livestock Development: Hon. Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Health: Mary Muthoni and Principal Secretary, State Department for Gender: Anne Wang’ombe. Also present were representatives from the National Government and Counties; Chairpersons and Board Members of various State Corporations; and CEOs from the livestock and agriculture sectors.

The establishment of this Centre marks a significant milestone in the modernization of Kenya’s livestock sector and underscores the government’s commitment to food security, rural development and economic empowerment.

Sale of Bull Semen

KAGRC distributes semen, Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) and Artificial Insemination (AI) Equipment through seventy three (73) appointed agents spread within the Country.

In addition, KAGRC, has established Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with over twenty nine (29) County Governments that purchase semen Liquid Nitrogen and AI equipment directly from KAGRC.

Currently the Centre is dealing with bull semen but in KAGRC’s strategic plan, semen for other species e.g. goats, pigs, poultry, donkeys, camels and other animals will be availed.

Extension Services

KAGRC has an extension department which educates farmers, students and AI service providers on matters related to animal breeding including breeding technologies.

Production of Liquid Nitrogen

KAGRC produces liquid Nitrogen which is used in semen processing and preservation at its three (3) Liquid Nitrogen plants in Sotik-Bomet County, Ndomba-Kirinyaga County, and Lower Kabete –Nairobi County.

The Liquid Nitrogen is sold to Agents and AI inseminators. The Centre will soon install other LN2 plants in Kakamega and Voi counties and operationalize the ones in Marimba -Meru, Nyahururu-Nyandarua and Eldoret- Uasin Gishu Counties.

Hon. Dr. Nuh Nassir Abdi is a distinguished professional with a wealth of experience in governance, public finance, and veterinary medicine. A graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM), Dr. Nuh has built an impressive career spanning leadership, consultancy, and public service.
He has served in various capacities, including as a Member of Parliament for Bura Constituency and Speaker of the Tana River County Assembly. Dr. Azegele is the Director of Veterinary Services in the Directorate of Veterinary Services within the State Department for Livestock Development of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
